INTERACTIVE SCIENCE NOTEBOOK (IAN) So what is an Interactive Notebook?
An Interactive Notebook is a tool that will help you succeed in this class. You will use your notebook to 1) review for quizzes and tests, 2) keep track of assignments and class progress on a daily basis, 3) personalize your learning experience in science by having a means to reflect thoughtfully, creatively, and individually.
What are my responsibilities?
You are responsible for keeping up with all notebook entries. If you are absent, you must copy the notes from your lab partner or from the class notebook. You will need to keep your table of contents up to date. All of your notebook entries must have page numbers.
How will the notebook be graded?
I may spot check your notebook at any time without notice. You may also have the opportunity to use your notebook on a quiz. The completion and neatness of your notebook will be recorded as a class grade. Keeping an organized notebook will help you succeed on tests and other graded assignments so it will also improve your academic grade.
What is the difference between a “right side” and a “left side” activity?
Right side (input) activities are done together as a class. Some examples of right side entries include class notes, handouts or worksheets completed as a class, and any handouts that include testable information.
Left side (output) activities are done on your own. It is your opportunity to “show me you know” in a variety of ways.
Your INTERACTIVE SCIENCE NOTEBOOK (IAN) will increase your - understanding of science by...
- using writing as a process for discovery and synthesis of inquiry.
- modeling many enduring functions of scientists – recording information and data, creating experimental diagrams, forming associations and connections to other learning, and asking thoughtful questions.
- improving your ability to organize ideas and information to provide a study reference for each unit, as well as a resource to consult for review prior to tests, and higher grades as you continue in science.
· demonstrating to your teacher and parents your developing organizational skills, understanding of science concepts and ability to express thoughts and feelings in a variety of ways.
· deepening the science skills acquired in prior years by application to 6th grade science.
Think as a scientist… record as a scientist… and reflect as a scientist!
